Howdie do do do. Is there anyway to get downloads for "Imitation Life"? That album was introduced to me when I was about 19 or so....it's all a blur, when I was singing in a band. This guy said "hey, you gotta listen to this and move your voice in that direction:. My favorite is "Idiot". It would be a nice piece to have. Anyway, I also belong to a group of healers and we have been involved with bringing Kay Gardner to this area, founded "women with wings" a womens' voice/chanting she has passed away yet it's nice to see you carry on the power of a women's voice. How can we be a part of the acoustic living room tour? I live in Muskegon, Michigan. We are on the lakeshore, the only underdeveloped lakeshore town on the planet. We hope to keep it that way. Anyway, thanks for the memories, glad to find you are still in the arms of music & prospering. Take care, Carleen

Hi Robin, I was listening to "When things go wrong" today and being a guitar twanger, I dilligently searched for the TAB on your great song. So you can't imagine when how thilled I was when I found this message board. Since no one has tabbed out the song, I was even more thrilled that the chords came from you of people! I'm glad I re-discovered you. I fully intend on buying your CD(s) and I would like very much to see if you could be booked at the Tupelo Hall in Londonderry NH. At the very least, I would like to see if I could set up a living room concert somewhere. Great to see you're out there. All the best from an old fan who absoulutely loves that sultry, silky voice!

We're so excited about the Battle for the Brattle in February. With so many musicans performing, we know the Chartbusters won't get a ton of time on stage, but we're ready for all we can get. Please consider "All Fall Down" and " In My World" as part of your set, and if they won't fit, maybe the one I identify with the most, "Idiot". I won't be "Waiting in Line" for this one, The Regent has on line tickets!

When is Collector's Choice going to issue "Imitation Life"? Or even Warner Brothers for that matter. What a classic album! Bought it when it first came out. I don't have a turntable anymore so I can't hear it now.
I thought that once the first LP was released on CD, the second wouldn't be far behind. What on earth happened to it?

I know Larry and Ray enjoyed the show too. Hope to see more of you in Boston.

It's nice to follow up on your musical career ...

I currently reside in Colorado)
I must say it was great to see your band at the tail end of the
first hour!
What was it like being one of the first female artists played on
MTV?
You certainly were in good company! (following Pat Benatar and
The Pretenders)
I was interested in hearing your detailed personal account of
creating the video for "When Things Go Wrong"...especially
since the creative video process was truly in its infancy at
that time...
What was it like for you and the band when that clip aired?
How many music videos have you made with and
without The Chartbusters over the years?
Any plans on releasing them on DVD?
By the way, your debut CD rocks :)
The Living Room Tours sounds like a wonderful intimate concept...
Take care and god bless...

I am especially interested in your work helping women through "A Woman's Voice". I would like to get involved somehow. hi everyone......
i haven't been here in awhile and if i go back to see who wrote what this will be erased. I guess i should check with the webmaster who will probably tell me i'm not doing some very simple thing correctly. It takes me years to figure out what other people do in a day. I finally learned to use my MARS Zoom portostudio...
I love it. but if it hadn't been for Roy, webmaster, i would have stared at it in fear forever. now i will tackle the garage band or whatever works on my computer. i don't get vh1 or mtv so i don't get to see much of anything at home. It's only when i spend the night in boston at the soupy/bo's...that's my drummer tim jackson and his wife suzanne, that i sleep on their futon and stay up the whole night watching many re-runs of svu and catching up on music video's. I did a few house concerts over the summer. A great one up in beverly at barrence and pati whitfields beautiful house where cole porter used to live when he was going to school around boston. I missed "the kennedy's" who were playing in northampton..........drat. couldn't leave the confines of my room with the MRS. I've been producing a couple women from the area and finishing up on the fourth Woman's Voice CD. I'm still hoping the NPR program is actually happening for A Woman's Voice. We must stand up against all the violence happening to children and to women.........men too but I work with mostly women. It seems too unseemly a subject matter for most men, unless they have been abused themselves. Break the silence. The only way to heal, is to shine a light on the dark place.......in a safe place. I'm working on my link to A Woman's Voice page on my own website and then I'm going to put up a robin lane my space page.........yep.........going to do it, I've resisted but too many people say just do it. Check out Ellen Cross on myspace. Listen to her song "easy road" also check out susan marie on my space........I met susan at summersongs in new york this summer, a songwriting camp my old friend Penny Nicoles runs. I was a songwriting coach. I just met Ellen at another songwriting get together up on lake winnapasakee, excuse my spelling, just this last weekend. I'm in love with her and her songs. David Champagne ran this workshop. He from Treat Her Right fame. Deb Pasternak was also there as was Ramona Silver.........amazing women song writers. I say women songwriters because it takes a certain kind of courage to persevere in this songwriting world, even these days when there are many women songwriters. It's still a mans world out there unless you have the chutzpa .....well...to be fare it's hard out here for a man too. and..."it's hard out here for a pimp when your trying to earn the money for the rent" loved that movie "hustle and flow"
I'm back in school studying for my MA which I'm intending to get without a BA. Don't ask how yet. I just stepped outside to let my dog do her last tinks of the evening and a pack of coyotes were howl howl howling and then silence.....
I love it..........love the wild country outside my door. I'm going to start recording an album for myself within the next couple months. I think it will be exactly what i want to do...........simple just me playing all the instruments.......I even play drums sort of like.........well.......a snare and a cowbell...........sometimes a tom.........that's cool
If I don't talk to you before election day.......
don't forget to vote.........and not for the idiots please.
Love Robin

Robin,
Wow!!! I thought all these years, that I was the only one who remembered your music. It's just a great treat finding your website:) Funny story, a couple of days an old friend of mine who I haven't seen in 20 years and grew up with me outside of Boston found my email address, and sent me an mp3 of my favorite song of yours that she remembered (When Things Go Wrong). Hearing it again after so many years was like a breath of fresh air! I've actually turned my youngest boy onto some of your work, and he absolutely loves it!!!.... Another generation of fans. I then googled and found your site, which blew my mind, as one of your contributor's in memorabilia was a very close friend of mine during the late 70's and early 80's (Deb Beaudry), if it's Deb who grew up in Southbridge, MA with a sister named Cindy, and knew Scott, and Mikey and hung out in Milford. She actually turned me on to the punk movement in the late 70's and early 80's and thru her I actually learned of Robin Lane, the Boomtown Rats, Clash, Rachel Sweet, Gruppo Sportivo (forgive my spelling), and the likes.
Time passes fast, and now I live as rural as one can go, and still live on the east coast of North America (I live in New Brunswick, Canada now). Do you ever perform up this way? If you do, please announce it, so others who live in the great white north will know. Also, if you could pass my email address (d.southern@linuxmail.org) to Deb Beaudry, I'd love to get caught up on all those lost years.

I've been dutifully working on a Robin Lane vinyl to CD project for over three years. It's finally to the point where I'm happy with it.
Living in the L.A. area, it's fairly easy to find clean copies of most the out of print vinyl titles. But I have like 10 copies of Imitation Life and about 8 copies of 5 Live. Heart Connection was not easy to find, but I managed to rescue a copy from New Orleans before Katrina hit.
The CD I have put together is the culmination of all I have learned about vinyl digital transcription over the past three years. My first attempts at "vinyl ripping" as some call it where less than satisfactory. I have come up with a rather sophisticated process that completely avoids any noise reduction software. My copies are punchy and brite, but not harsh.
I have no interest in violating copyright laws. I might be persuaded to part with a vinyl copy of 5 Live and/or Imitation Life and kick in a copy of those titles on CD for a bit of a surcharge. But I'm not in it for the money.
If you're interested, drop me a line at

For the record, my "Ultimate CD" track list:
(From "5 Live"):
1 When Things Go Wrong (Live)
2 Lost My Mind
3 When You Compromise
4 8.3
5 Shakin' All Over
(From "Imitation Life")
6 Send Me An Angel
7 What The People Are Doing
8 Imitation Life
9 Say Goodbye
10 No Control
11 Rather Be Blind
12 Solid Rock
13 Pretty Mala
14 Idiot
15 For You

16 Rather Be Blind

Tim Jackson, drummer from Chartbusters, is now a film and media teacher at New England Institute of Art. He filmed his first documentary last year to rave reviews and now he's doing another on subversive art. He's letting me do some of the music. I've very excited by this. Dana Colley from Morphine and Twinemen is doing some of the music as are some other Boston musicians. I always wanted to do film music........I'm on my way. Hi, Robin--
I live in Williamsburg, Va., and work Saturday mornings at a local radio station, 92.3 WTYD (The Tide). I do a show from 9 AM to 11 AM called "Buried Treasures", where I play "lost" songs of the '70s and '80s--things that used to get played on album rock stations, but no one plays anymore. I also play great songs that didn't get any attention when they were first released. I wanted you to know that I play your songs pretty frequently, about once a month or so. Just this morning I played "Imitation Life". Hopefully, I'm growing you a whole new set of fans.

Hi Robin Lane,
I am an old fan who just had a birthday. One of my most memorable birthdays was coming to see you from U Mass Amherst in Harvard Square. It snowed very hard that night and we stayed at one of our friends homes in Boston. You were wonderful as usual and we were all glad we made the trip. I know this is dating me but I loved that music you made that was more ballad type. Is there a way to get that on CD.
Thanks,Julie

Wow. I was just reminiscing about the good ole days (I'm 48 in August) with some youger co-workers n their 20's who wish they lived in the days I grew up in and are always asking what it was like in "the day." Well today's story was about the night I saw Robin Lane and The Chartbusters at Sir Morgan's Cove in Worcester, Massachusetts. Still one of the best performances I have ever seen. And as a youngster of roughly 20 years old I was eager to part of the moment. And Robin, to her credit was cool enough (some say crazy enough) to hand me the microphone as I was pressed against the stage. Of course being 20 and full of words of wisdom - I blurted out "are you fuc_ers ready to rock and roll or what." What and idiot. But anyway, the crowd screamed, Robin stared singing and the Chartbusters were really rocking that place so much you could feel the building vibrate. It was awesome. I only wished I'd got the chance to stay for the rest of the performance. But while Robin was busting it out the bouncers were throwing me out (they had no sense of humor. But I still remember Robin Lane and the Chartbusters rockin with the best of them either 1979 or 80 I think. Thanks for the memories - John from Worcester.

Keep making your great music Robin. Although I love the Warner bros albums you sound even better on the smaller label Wind jam and Ocean Records, anyway enough humble opinions, It has been a while since I wrote on the message board but you still have a lifetime fan in Berwick PA, And since I still play all your music as if it was released yesterday many younger fans are liking it too.....

Hi Robin - A couple of years ago a guy out in California, via New Wave Outpost, was offering to put vinyl to CD and one of his offerings was your first two full length albums on one CD. I was looking for some rare and out of print stuff (I have a very large music collection) and found Tom Dickie & The Desires (Downtown Talk was a favorite) and Interview (Adventurers) as well. Anyway, I jumped at the chance to grab your old records and was playing them in my car this morning on the way to work. I had forgotten all about Send Me An Angel (hate to be part of the problem, but I knew every note on the first record and not so much on the second unfortunately) and when I heard it I was thinking how similar it seems to Real Life's Send Me An Angel. Is that something you ever noticed? For a minute there I thought it was the same song. I hope you won't take offense to that. Anyway, just curious. When Things Go Wrong is in my Top 50 all time Boston based songs and I wrote into Boston Magazine saying as much about six months ago when they took a crack at their Top 50. You probably get tired of hearing it, but that was one masterpiece of a single. It sounds great to this day. I can still remember attending Emerson College (1978-1982) and just loving your record. Best of luck going forward.

Hi Robin, I enjoyed our chat at the songwriter's workshop and was disappointed you couldn't have stayed longer. I asked my girlfriend if she'd be interested in catching your show at the Middle East this weekend and she recalled meeting you at a gig a few years back, having a great conversation, exchanging numbers, etc. I'm not surprised. Jane Messere ring a bell? Anyway, hope to see you in Cambridge, or perhaps further down the road at a house concert. Meanwhile, here's a new twist for your propensity to set the words of others to music: try writing a song with lyrics composed completely of spam email titles. My latest fave has to be "legato thundershower formulaic appendage j's finery bacteria electorate." It's probably not a love song...

Michael O sent a fantastic live version of our song "Many Years Ago" We were pretty smokin. My son likes it too. Had a great time with Stroker and others at a songwriting retreat on an island in Lake Winnapasuke (sorry about the spelling) New Hampshire.....I do remember the name Jane Messere. I got in touch with my father's cousin Dede.......She's very nice. I didn't know many of my relatives growing up.....why was that? Can't go back now. Michael Adley...Heart Connection will not be coming out again.......what can I say? If I had lots of money I'm not sure I'd re-release it. Glad you like it though. David Stinsen...I went on myspace to see you and your dogs but couldn't find you. there were a lot of David Stinsen's...or Stinson's but I love to see the doggies. Oh Well! John F. thank you for the compliment. Real Life, Send Me An Angel.......I always thought that was funny as our album was called Imitation Life with Send Me An Angel being one of the songs.......weird. Jesse...I will and do keep making music. Always nice to see Linda.....saw your face but the Middle East was so hot I had to be outside most of the time...Many great bands played. Thank you John Smith for surviving Worcester. I did know a Gerhard Bart and a Tommy Schmeider when I was in Germany...Gerhard Schmeider.......I met you in New York? Thanks for writing.....I had a lobotomy somewhere along the way here.
I'm in school........it's hard but I manage to get all A's. I'm proud of myself for that as I was such a horrible student in high school. I'm going to get some

Hi Robin Lane Fans. I did not read all the post but many of you are looking for Imitation Life on CD. While not on CD it is available as a mp3 download on amazon.com along with Live +5. I feel fortunate to have gotten to see Robin Lane and the Chartbusters perform live in Durham NH at UNH's Snively arena I believe in
1979'ish. (I was in my teens). Also at that concert the Neighborhoods and the Rings performed. When they came out on stage and began I could not believe the energy with which Robin performed. Those of you who saw her live back then know what I mean. I'm glad to see Robin still performing and releasing new material and look forward to what else she will come out with. Thank You Robin for a very memorable event you ruled that concert. Tim

Glad to read that Robin is still making music and seems to have had (and still be having) a great life!

I grew up on Whitney Avenue off Chestnut Street in Cambridge. I was fortunate enough to hear Robin Lane and the Chartbusters practice and create their music. Yes, I was one of the group of kids that hung around outside that dark brown house. Although I may not have fully appreciated the experience at the time, meeting and listening to Robin Lane, Leroy Radcliff, Scott Baerenwald, Asa Brebner, and Tim Jackson remains one of my most treasured childhood memories. We were a typical group of neighborhood kids, Mrs. Lane and the guys were always kind but in retrospect I realize our constant presence in front of the house must have been mildly annoying at least. In fact I still remember one conversation I had with Mrs. Lane, we were talking about a cat and I said "sophisticated kitty" and she said that it would make a great song title, could she use it. I'm sure she was just placating a "townie" but I still vividly recall the moment. I remember being so excited hearing them on WBCN and when the debut album was released my friends and I were given copies by the group. I must have played that album a million times, so much so that my parents began to memorize the lyrics. When the second record was released I ran to the store, bought it and loved it as much as the first. Unfortunately I lost all of my music several years later in a fire. I have since re-purchased the debut album and over the years have added "Catbird Seat", "Piece of Mind" and "5 Live" but I cannot seem to find "Imitation Life" or "Deli Platters". If anyone knows where I can find these please email me at fenway82@hotmail.com.
P.S. Mrs. Lane, if you read this post I want to not only thank you for all the great childhood memories but also for bring my sons and I closer together. I played my CDs for them and they loved them so much that they played them for their friends. Now there is a large group of teens here in northern Massachusetts that thinks your music is "sweet" and we are the coolest parents around. You are still bringing the joy of music into the lives of young people and bridging the gap between generations. Thank you again so much.
